Signs of depression

It is normal to be sad when overcome by life’s struggles, setbacks, and disappointments. Most people use the word “depression” to express such feelings. However, depression is much more than plain sadness. Although depression varies from person to person, there are some common signs. It’s essential to remember that these symptoms can be part of life’s normal lows. If the symptoms persist, they become even stronger and the longer they last-all the more chances that you’re dealing with depression.

When the signs of depression are overpowering and incapacitating, that is the time to seek help. People suffering from depression describe it as “living in a black hole” or characterized by a feeling of impending doom. Some depressed people hardly feel sad — they feel lifeless, blank, and dispirited.

Depression is dissimilar from normal sadness as it overwhelms your day-to-day life, interferes with your professional capability and disrupts your studies, eating habits and sleep. The feelings of vulnerability, bleakness, and worthlessness are intense and unrelenting without much solace or relief.

Look out for the following symptoms:

  • Lack of interest in usual pastimes, social happenings, or sex. You’ve lost your capacity to feel joy.
  • Substantial weight loss or weight gain.
  •  Disturbed sleep, especially waking in the early hours of the morning, or oversleeping
  • Feeling irritable, short tempered, fidgety, or on edge. You suffer from a low level of tolerance and everyone gets on your nerves.
  • Feelings of fatigue and physically drained. You feel tired and listless and even small tasks are strenuous or take longer to complete.
  • Strong feelings of insignificance or guilt. You suffer from terrible low esteem and have thoughts that your life amounts to nothing.
  • Trouble concentrating, memory failure/lapses.
  • Physical ailments such as headaches, back pain, muscle aches and abdominal pain.
